4, Writing: Try to rewrite the topics in conversations in your own way by using the phrases and collocations learned..
Imitating the method
To paraphrase what you hear in your own sentences on some different levels. Here are some steps:
The first step, change it to the different subjects.
For instance, you will hear:
I’m 18 years old and I still live with my parents.
She’s 18 years old and she still lives with her parents.
Second, instead of repeating, you can develop the ideas by giving the detail of what happened in the past and something planned for the future.
For example, with the above sentence:
I’m 18 years old and I live with my parents.
You can describe more by yourself such as:
She used to live with her grandparents when she was a little girl and then when she turns into 18, she moves to live with her parents but in the future, she will try her best to buy her own house to live independently.
After learning how to change one sentence, you should challenge yourself by trying paraphrasing a larger portion of your speech, your conversation, or even your full story.
For instance, with the speech below:
My daily routine is like other people’s. I get up at 6.30 and then I brush my teeth and have breakfast 30 minutes later. At about 7.30, I go to school on foot and start my school time at 8.00.
You can imitate with more advancements like:
His daily routine is normally like other people’s. He gets up at 6.30 and brushes his teeth before he has breakfast at approximately 7. And then, 30 minutes later, he walks to school because he forgot to repair his bike yesterday. It takes him 20 minutes to arrive at school and luckily, he still has 10 minutes left to take a breath and review lessons before his school time starts.
Rewrite the conversation
There are 2 ways to rewrite the conversation.
The first method is using the topics given with collocations, only change how it delivers.
Oh, no! I’m afraid of talking in front of a lot of people.
Oh, no! It really scares me. How can I talk in front of a lot of people? I am so afraid of.
Oh, don’t worry. Everyone’s afraid at the beginning, but after you get to know the people and make friends.
You don’t need to worry. Everyone is the same as you at the beginning but when the time goes by, you will get to know the people and make friends.
The second method should be used after you learn by heart all collocations above because you will learn them with synonyms, which means you learn how to rewrite the sentences by different collocations.
Oh, no! I’m afraid of talking in front of a lot of people.
Oh, no! It really scares me. How can I talk in front of a lot of people? I am so afraid of.
Oh, don’t worry. Everyone’s afraid at the beginning, but after you get to know the people and make friends.
Oh, I’m also worried about that situation. Everyone’s afraid at first, but then you will feel more comfortable when you have an opportunity to know and become friends with people.
